• In the obscure bookshop (second stage of Part 1), Sadie refers to Karl Richard Lepsius, a 19th-century archaeologist and linguist, who (among numerous achievements in Egyptology) began the first systematic catalogue of the pyramids - the 'Lepsius list'.
• The story of Alfred Ely Beach and his Pneumatic Transit is also historical (minus Raeks and the jittery-handed margins, sadly); the system (more of a curiosity than a promising prototype) was inaugurated on February 26, 1870, operated for three years, and mostly collapsed while the New York subway was being developed in 1912 (when our Sadie was born!). There are still indications of "vault or ventilation areas" from the 'BPT' today ...
